Job Title: CLZ Base Camp Manager
Location: CLZ Base Camp, Lower Zambezi, Zambia
Background: Conservation Lower Zambezi is a non-profit organisation committed to the protection of wildlife and the sustainable use of natural resources in the Lower Zambezi in Zambia. Established in 1994, CLZ is centred around 3 main pillars of support: Wildlife Protection, Environmental Education and Community Empowerment. The organisation works in collaborations with Zambia’s local wildlife authority – the Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) to ensure the sustainability of the wildlife and people in the Lower Zambezi National Park and surrounding Game Management Areas.
CLZ is looking to recruit a full-time Base Camp Manager who will answer to the CLZ Finance and Projects Manager and be responsible for the day-to-day running projects of CLZ Base Camp.
The role will include but not be limited to the following tasks:
Management of Base Camp and supplies:
- Work closely with the CLZ Stores and Logistics Officer in maintaining efficient stock management systems;
- Preparing procurement lists of food/other supplies for base camp and projects;
- Manageandoverseeinventoryandchecksofallkitchenequipment,roomlinenandaccessories;
- Further upgrade systems to support kitchen staff, room attendants, food stores and procurement runs; • Ensure all rooms and areas of base camp are clean, functional and up to standards at all times;
- Maintain a high level of hygiene and health and safety standards;
- Support the Maintenance Assistant by reporting on maintenance issues in tents/rooms/kitchen.
Management of camp staff:
- Management of kitchen and room staff;
- Develop innovative staff motivation systems/ideas;
- Conduct training where required to upgrade skills of kitchen staff and room attendants;
- Maintain camp staff attendance register;
- Manage volunteers when necessary;
- Manage selection and procurement of staff uniforms.
Base Camp Accommodation:
- Manage accommodation bookings and ensure all bookings are communicated with relevant camp staff for catering, transport, etc.;
- Keep track of accommodation bookings and report to the CLZ Finance and Projects Manager on a monthly basis for invoicing, where necessary;
- Meet, greet and host donors/community members/DNPW staff/school groups/pilots and any other guests that may be staying at CLZ Base Camp;
- Conduct camp familiarisation tours as required;
- Develop menus for camp, visitor groups, school groups, etc.
- Base Camp administrative assistance;
- Assisting the Finance and Projects Manager on various administrative tasks and activities as required;
- Develop ideas to improve CLZ’s image and standards.
Environmental Education Administration and Support:
- Assist the Environmental Education Manager on administrative and technical tasks related to the education programme;
- Manage the Wuka project centred on guiding girls.
Candidate Profile:
The ideal candidate should have:
- A degree or diploma in Hospitality, Environmental Education, Biodiversity Science or any other related field
- An added advantage is experience and/or qualification in hospitality and/or food and beverage
- Strong written and spoken English skills
- Computer literate including MS Word and Excel
- Strong organisational skills
- Ability to work well in a team
- Ability to live in a remote environment
- Good communication skills
- High level of integrity
Location: The CLZ Base Camp Manager will be based at CLZ Base Camp on the border of the Lower Zambezi National Park on the banks of the Zambezi River.
